DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIO WORK

“My grandfather used to go clay pigeon shooting. However in the earlier years of my life, the birds often weren’t made from clay. I remember skipping down his path in Broughton (North Lincolnshire) to knock on his door and finding several mallard ducks hanging by their legs in his porch. Here, I paint the ducks alive in flight, referencing the iconic 1950s flying duck wall hangings which may have been present in my grandfather’s youth. The birds radiate an air of revelation and release, unlike those which hung from his door. Ironically, my grandfather loved birds and I attribute my own interest in them today to him.”

This body of work presents a selection of pieces created while working as a studio artist at Magdalen Road Studios. It highlights moments of personal history through several paint and cloth ‘arrangements’. Dove on Cloth, 2019 references religious paintings such as The Baptism of Christ, by Andrea del Verrocchio and Leonardo da Vinci. In a similar way to Flying Ducks, this piece holds sense of contentment, which contrasts from previous work such as that of Study Series, where birds are presented as specimens in an archive.
